It seems like every day there’s a new story about a major website that got hacked, and frankly it’s more than a little unsettling. Even if you are not a big company like Sony or Blue Cross and you think your site doesn’t have information worth hacking for, you may want to think again. Many website security breaches are not intended to deface your website or steal information, but instead they attempt to use your server as an email relay for spam, or to setup a temporary web server to serve files of an illegal nature.
Hacking is often performed by automated scripts that scour the internet attempting to exploit known website security issues in software. That’s why it’s imperative to stay vigilant about the upkeep of your website in order to maintain it’s general health and security. Every website owner should take preventative measures to secure their site in order to keep it from being vulnerable to hackers.
